Eugenio S. Shapoval (b. 1986, Ukraine) is a self-taught artist based in Spain whose practice is an ongoing exploration of identity, memory, and the passage of time. Having relocated to Spain at the age of fifteen, his work reflects not just a fusion of post-Soviet roots and Western culture, but a deep inquiry into how our environment shapes who we are.
Shapoval views the human persona as a layered social product - built upon acquired rules, fears, and the expectations of others. Operating outside traditional academic frameworks, he turns his lack of formal institutional training into his greatest asset. His approach to the canvas is completely unfiltered, driven by a profound desire to unlearn imposed boundaries.
For Shapoval, painting is a physical act of excavation. He moves away from recognizable forms, working instead with heavy industrial materials, intense textures, and a process of mechanical erosion. By applying dense layers of matter and subsequently tearing them down, he physically mirrors the dismantling of his own social armor. He does not try to conceal the tension or uncertainty in his process. Instead, he aggressively digs through these imposed layers to reach what he calls the "noise of inner silence" - that exact moment when external rules fall away, leaving only raw instinct and a confrontation with what remains underneath.
